5 Major Changes I Would Do If I Was Instagram
Let’s start with Reels
I get it.
I really do.
Instagram is the “everything” app. From posting pictures, to stories, IGTV, shopping, and now Reels. It’s the app that everybody wants to be on…allegedly.
Now, I want to emphasize that I genuinely like IG. If anything, it’s probably one of the best apps on the market because it’s so easy to use. Mind you, I had an account since 2010 when filters were still the best thing on the market. It’s really fascinating to see how far this app has gotten since 10 years ago.
Although I appreciate Instagram being a versatile app, I can’t help but to feel suffocated on the platform. I’m not sure what IG is anymore. It started off as a cool and “unique” app where people can share pictures and build a community. Now it feels too much and suffocating.
Today, I’m not here to bash Instagram because I respect the app and the history behind it. Rather, I’m giving them a word of advice because I would hate to see this app lose its streak for no reason.

1. Goodbye Reels
If I wanted to create fun, humorous, dance videos I would go on TikTok.
That’s why TikTok is there. It’s an app for a specific group of people who want to do a very specific thing. They know who their audience is and why their audience is there.
If IG has to put a button where people should utilize Reels more, it shows me that only a small amount of users actually utilizes Reels.
2. See You Later Shopping Button
If I wanted to go shopping, I would go to the actual website or their app to go shopping. I don’t need IG to do that for me.
Most of the time if I’m shopping somewhere that isn’t super well-known, I would go straight to their website by clicking their link on the bio or their stories.
I totally understand that shopping is subjective because some people prefer to do their shopping one way or another. However, if IG felt a strong urge to add a shopping button next to the Reel button (LOL), it shows me that the shopping feature isn’t utilized as much as other features. Therefore, it’s just taking up space and collecting dust.
3. Let’s Go Back to the Basics
Remember the cool kids in high school and how they felt a strong urge to do everything trendy? Then they grew up and (hopefully) realized that they didn’t have to try too hard to fit in?
This is the similar concept that I see for IG. They really don’t need to do much to get people to use their app. I promise, if someone actually wants to stick around on their platform, they don’t have to do too much to get their attention.
Imagine how many people would use Instagram if they didn’t make all of those unnecessary changes and they focused more on their algorithm? That’s the most basic thing that I hope IG can fix in the future.
4. Find Your Purpose Again
I’m not a life coach but I think IG lost its purpose. Do they know why their app serves a valuable role in the market?
My word of advice for all apps in this world is…Find you purpose and know why your app is needed for this generation. What can you do to add more value and excitement into your users life?
5. Listen to Your Users
If you want to write a good story, listen to your editors.
If you want to do well in school, ask for help from your peers and/or teachers.
If you want your app to do better in the market, you need to listen to your users. Seriously, take their feedback seriously and make the necessary changes.
The answer to most company’s problems lies within their users, audience, and/or consumers.
