How to Increase Reader Engagement On Wattpad
If you’re a new Wattpad user, read this!
Let me guess? You published a story on Wattpad, it’s been more than 2 days, and you have zero reads.
I get it. I’ve written on Wattpad before. It was definitely an ego booster when I had 5–10 reads that came out of the blue.
Heck, it was great when someone took the time to read my work, vote, and leave a nice comment!
However, when that didn’t happen, I wonder why nobody wanted to read my work.
Did I do something wrong?
So, what exactly is the “secret” to increase reader engagement on Wattpad? How does one even get a reader to read a story, comment, and vote?
Too be honest, I don’t have the answer but I do have a few useful tips that I’ve gathered from being on Wattpad for the past 8 years.

- Know the Basics
Before we even dive into the nitty gritty details on Wattpad, you must know the basics on how to be successful on Wattpad.
All I have to say here is know the basics and master it as well as you can. I wrote a story on some essential and general ways to be successful on Wattpad. Please give it a read!
2. Use The Right Tags
I dabbled a little bit on this in my previous article on Wattpad but it’s super important that you use relevant tags on your story.
The best way to use the right tags is to know what your story is about. Then take those keywords and use them as your hashtags.
3. Book Covers Matter
First impressions matter on Wattpad. If you want your readers to notice your work and to read it, you need to have an eye-catching cover.
For anyone who says they’re not “artistic” or “creative” enough to create their own covers, here’s something that I do that helps me a lot: I learned that sometimes less is more!
I recommend having a solid color scheme and to stick with a basic font for your cover if you’re not an artistic person. The great part is you can use Canva (for free) to create most of your book covers.
The best way to use the right tags is to know what your story is about.
4. Hidden Gem Stories
As soon as you update your story, the first 15–20 minutes are crucial because you want your story to be noticed. If you want the best results, you should advertise your work asap.
However…what I do in that small time frame is advertise in a different way. I go straight to the hidden gem stories and read their stories.
Why? Because they’re striving for the same thing as me. We want engagement, reads, and new followers. So, if you want other users to support you, you have to support them too.
Also, you have a higher chance of getting a smaller writer’s attention because your comment and votes won’t get lost in the crowd.
5. Quality Over Quantity
It’s essential that you write quality chapters on Wattpad. Even though a lot of writers are new to the writing world and they make a lot of mistakes, most of them do improve through time.
As they evolve with the platform, their writing style begins to change too. Their profile, books, and overall vibe of their account changes through the years.
So, if you want more people to read your story, you have to put some effort into writing some good chapters. The best two ways to be a better writer is to obviously write and to read as much books as possible!
Take advantage of the “conversations” area on Wattpad. Even if you have 1 follower, you should still use it to notify them on your updates.
I can’t tell you how many followers of mine have commented back or showed their support for my work just because I used that feature on a daily basis.
If you want other users to support you, you have to support them too
7. Give It Time
If you have under 100 followers, there’s a chance that you won’t get reads and comments instantly. In fact, I would give it a few hours to see some results.
For me, I have a very small following on Wattpad. I usually have to wait 24 hours to see if my book got any sort of engagement. To my surprise, I usually do get some sort of read, comment, vote, or follow from a number of users.
8. Put Some Reminders
Usually, I’m so immersed into a story that I completely forget to comment and vote. Whenever I see a reminder, I instantly comment or vote to show my support.
Sometimes, it’s just an honest mistake that readers make because they’re (most likely) distracted by how good your story is!
The more love you show them, the more love you’ll get back
If you want your comment section to skyrocket, add a question of the day. I find that when an author asks a question at the end of a chapter, their readers will usually answer the question.
It’s a great way to encourage engagement and it helps you develop a relationship with your readers!
10. Comment Back
Especially if you’re a new Wattpad user, please take the time out to respond to your readers! I like to think that the more love you show them, the more love you’ll get back.
Remember: Wattpad is social media. Like I mentioned in my previous story, if you don’t socialize on Wattpad you are missing a huge component to the platform!
