WayV “Unbreakable” Meaning & Review
From the Awaken The World album
Have you ever listened to a song hundreds of times and every time the song gets better? This was exactly how I felt when I listened to “Unbreakable” by WayV. This song was one of the tracks from the Awaken The World album which was released in June 2020.
Dare I say, I liked it a little bit more than the other songs in the album.
However, I want to emphasize that every song in the album was catchy and enjoyable in its own way. I’m sure most of you can agree that there’s always that one song in an album that captures your attention more than the others. That song just happens to be “Unbreakable” for me.
Before we get into the meaning of this song, let’s talk a little bit about the group. If you’re new to the K-pop industry then you’ll probably mistaken WayV as a K-pop group.
In actuality, they’re a 7 member Chinese boy group who sings Mandopop. They’re under SM Entertainment, one of Big 4 companies in South Korea. Most importantly, WayV is a subunit to one of SM’s popular boy groups called NCT.
What’s This Song About?
After analyzing the lyrics, I feel like this song was a crossing path between a dream and a reality. The dream is about holding on to a love interest that’s clearly gone. The reality is the heartbreak and actually dealing with the truth.
Locked up in the cage you left behind
Surrounded by this fog that’s impossible to escape…
It clearly shows that the boys are reflecting on a past relationship that left a deep impact on them. Then we move on to Kun, Yang Yang, and WinWin’s part where they say:
Beaten black and blue, licking my wounds
The repeating storyline
We come and go oh
Oh baby I’ve tried to forget you
Gone endlessly crazy, never giving up…
So, I can’t help but to feel like this has to do with an ongoing toxic relationship. Maybe it has to do with an underlying obsession with this person. Maybe the boys know that this relationship won’t go anywhere but they try to make it work anyway but it just results to heartbreak.
Then we get to the chorus (I think) where they boys say:
The scene of every night is clear and sharp
When love is trapped at the bottom of silence, waiting as no one responds
The broken me who has been pieced together
In the rift I still cling to love
I feel like this is a clear indication that the boys are waiting to see if this love can “revive” itself. They’re trying to hold on to whatever is left of this relationship so it doesn’t go away. However, they’re not getting anything but silence.
So, I’m thinking that’s why the song is called “Unbreakable.” It’s because even if they’re broken inside and the relationship is gone, they’re still holding to every piece of that love.
Then we get to this part where the boys are basically seeing the realities of love. Love is no longer a fairytale to them. They’re basically experiencing heartbreak and confusion.
After you left; I lost all expectations for fairy tales
Blushing and waiting persistently
I wear my heart on my sleeve
Love was once so close
A heavy fear armed with infatuation
Because it’s worth it through the pain …
So if we skip all the way to the end of the song, we see that the boys are having a hard time facing the realities of this relationship. This is where my assumptions came in that this song could be a cross path between a dream and a reality.
Continue this dream in the name of love
The end of darkness is a silhouette that can’t be erased
Don’t walk away we’re unbreakable
Unbreakable unbreakable unbreakable
Overall, I get the vibe that their dreams are the only place where they can keep the love from breaking. In reality, the love is being “erased” and it’s no longer there. It’s not salvageable. Maybe that’s why they don’t want to wake up from their dreams.
That’s probably why they ended the song with…
